How our debate society helps us open to other viewpoints

Danny Zeevi - member of the "Grains of Peace" Debate Society at Tel Aviv University and an extremely talented debator - wrote especially for Grains of Peace following his trip to the World Championship in Thailand in January 2008, a trip we made possible.

" A typical scene after a debate we hold in our debate society, is one where everybody is continuing to argue for their case, even after the competition is over, and the judicators are consulting while trying to figure out who won...

Grains of Peace Program with the Debate Society of the University of Tel Aviv

This program just completed its 2nd year. The first year culminated in the European debate competition in Kocs, Turkey. Grains of Peace was present at the last debate of the year, after a first session devoted to peace education training to the students. During the 2nd year, we improved the performance by introducing a novel point system which integrated notes on the inclusion of human values and the promotion of peace, long term, in the choice of debates, in the respective arguments and in the human interactions of the students with each other. This point system helped the team achieve superb results in Talinn Estonia (European championships in June 2008). The winner, Uri Merhav was interviewed on Tel Avivi radio, mentioning the Grains of Peace partnership. The other condition for support was encouraging Arab students to join and take part. 2 Arab students did, and we push for this trend to continue, because debate societies are a very good way of getting to the know the other and thinking together.

Programme Palestine
